Queen of Trucks and Filthy Business make their debut
6 July 2022
The first two of BBC Three's new commissions from West Midlands indies as a result of the creative partnership with BBC England and Create Central
The first show, from Acclaimed Content, follows a 27-year-old female business owner who is on a mission to shake up the haulage scene. Shannan Paterson is getting more young drivers on the road to help ease the HGV driver shortage thanks to her driving school.
She took over the West Midlands-based family business at a time of tragedy but as the daughter of a veteran HGV driver, trucking runs in her blood.
Viewers will get a front seat view of her driving school based in Willenhall where young learners can bag their licence by completing an intense course.
Juggling the business with helping to raise her younger sister, Shannan is also trying to get her own HGV licence with help from veteran instructor and dad, Trevor.
Queen of Trucks was commissioned as a result of the West Midlands Voices initiative, which is a joint BBC Three and BBC England scheme designed to develop production talent in the West Midlands, in partnership with Create Central.
The partnership invited independent production companies based in the West Midlands to submit documentary ideas that reflect the life experiences of 13-24 year olds.
The second show, Filthy Business from Common Story, follows friends Cam and Oli as they try to grow their new waste management business.
The partners in grime started up when they were furloughed, never expecting the work would take off as it has. They soon realised that if they graft hard, there is money to be made from hopping into hoarder’s houses or cleaning out grubby garages. But now they are facing year two and working out how to grow the company, keep their friendship on track, whilst still finding time for love and life.
Every job is a journey of discovery and with big characters like Cam and Oli, this entertaining film provides a fresh take on being your own boss.
Filthy Business has already been featured, reviewed and chosen as a major “Pick of the Week” in the Radio Times, Closer, What’s on TV, TV & Satellite Week and TV Times. Critics have said: “…this one-off life-of-grime profile offers up some quietly touching insights into the boys’ dreams of the future. And the tally of profit and loss in the form of an on-screen graphic adds a note of welcome drama”. - Radio Times
4/5 stars – “[The boys] chemistry and banter will have you hoping that they succeed.” - TV Times Magazine
Create Central, is supported by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.
