Crew mapping and skills forecasting study for the BFI

24 January 2023

SPI has been commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) to create a new methodology for mapping crew, and trial a skills forecasting service in the UK. As part of this study, SPI has partnered with Create Central, where the study will examine the West Midlands production cluster.

This is a critically important study in the current UK production landscape, where significant growth in film and high-end television (HETV) production has led to serious shortages of skills.

The project is also of strategic importance, responding directly to recommendations in the recent BFI Skills Review commissioned by the DCMS. The Review also contributed to the development of the BFI’s new 10-year National Lottery funding strategy.

The study is commissioned by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.
